CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The East Carolina women's soccer team got off to a rocky start in its first game of the 2004 season as the fell to national ranked (No. 7) Virginia 4-0 Friday night at Klockner Stadium.
In front of 700 fans, Virginia (1-0) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as fourth-year defender Gillian Hatch blasted a rebound from 15 yards out just 1:30 into the game to start the scoring. In the 12th minute, the Cavaliers struck again as Sarah Huffman found the upper corner of the net from 25 yards out. Virginia added one more first half goal with just 11 seconds remaining before halftime as Noelle Keselica's through ball found Shannon Foley who broke in alone and chipped the ball over the Lauren Church (Hagerstown, Md.) into the net. The Cavaliers' added one more goal in the second half as Huffman's cross along the end line was one-timed into the goal by Kelly Hammond.
The Pirates (0-1) could not get anything started and had their lone opportunity to score on a second half corner kick by Melissa Penney that was disrupted by the Cavaliers defense.
"This Virginia team is by far the best opponent that we have played against in my six years at East Carolina," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We are young in the backfield and they took advantage of that. There is a lot of work for us to do, and we must rebound quickly and get ready to play a very good Wilmington team on Sunday."
The Pirates will travel to instate rival UNC Wilmington on Sunday for a 7 p.m. tilt, before opening their season at home on Friday Sept. 3, against Georgia Southern.
