Women's Soccer Starts Conference Play On The Road

GREENVILLE, N.C. ? The East Carolina women's soccer team will open conference play this weekend when they travel to in-state rival Charlotte (0-7-0) on Friday, Sept. 24, at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C.
The Pirates (2-4-1) posted a 0-1-1 record last week dropping their first match at home, 3-0, to Virginia Commonwealth, and recorded their first double-overtime tie of the season against Campbell, 2-2.
Junior forward Meghan McCallion is starting to get some good looks at the goal for the Pirates. Against Campbell, she recorded six shots, three on goal and netted her second goal of the season and 22nd of her career to move into sole possession of third place on the schools all-time scoring list.
ECU owns a 14-10-7 overall record in three years of Conference USA play and head coach Rob Donnenwirth knows that league games are important.
"League play is a critical time for us, with only eight teams out of 14 making the playoffs," said Donnenwirth. "Every game we play seems to be a battle, which was evident last season with our 3-4-3 conference record. Even though Charlotte is going through a slump right now, they are a dangerous team and we will have to play smart in the backfield, and push the ball up the field for some good scoring looks."
Charlotte holds a 4-0-1 all-time record against the Pirates, including last years 1-0 overtime when at Bunting Field, which sent the 49ers to the C-USA soccer tournament and ended ECU's season at 7-7-5 overall.
The Pirates will wrap up their non-conference schedule when they travel Western Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 26 for a 1 p.m. start time before heading back home to kick off the home conference slate.
