HOUSTON, Texas - The East Carolina women's soccer team defeated Houston Sunday afternoon, 1-0, at Robertson Stadium for its first win in Conference USA play.
The Pirates (5-7-0, 1-1-0) game-winning goal came on a counter attach at the 87:28 mark. Meghan McCallion (Long Island, N.Y.) threaded the ball through the UH (6-3-1, 1-1-0) defense, finding Ashley Stopa (Park Ridge, Ill.) on the far post. Stopa headed the ball home for her second goal of the season.
Houston held a decided offensive advantage through the contest, tallying 17 shots to nine for ECU. ECU goalkeeper Amber Campbell (Frederick, Md.) held the Cougars at bay recording her second career shutout and coming up with seven saves on the day.
Stephanie Pucek took the loss for UH in goal, making five saves in the contest.
McCallion's assist on the game-winning goal, moved her into a tie for second place on ECU's all-time assist list (17) with former Pirate great Amanda Duffy.
"I thought we played extremely well today," said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. "After Friday's loss, this team really showed me what they were made of. I was pleased with the defensive play we had. Madison Keller and Nicole Moore really did a great job of stopping Houston's treats today."
The Pirates will be return to action Friday, Oct. 7 when they host the Memphis Tigers at 4 p.m. at Bunting Field.
