
Softball Concludes Fall Season With Undefeated Record

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina softball team posted an unblemished 7-0 record during a trio of events as it recently concluded its fall schedule. Senior Krista Jessup led all hitters with a .565 batting average, going 13-for-23 with seven runs, six stolen bases and five RBIs.
Each member of the freshmen class hit over .300 during the season, led by California native Jessica Johnson. She batted .391 with six RBIs, two triples and a home run. Fellow Californian Vanessa Moreno hit a .375 clip, while Sarah Bibee and Angel Barrella each batted .308.
Against UNC Pembroke, Johnson and Moreno each went 4-for-5 with multiple RBIs and a triple. Jessup collected five hits in the 12-7 win over UNCP.
In the first exhibition game against Francis Marion, Jessup produced the game-winning run as she drove in Bibee after junior college transfer Joyce Roodenburg tied the score with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Roodenburg also came up big again against Campbell, driving in two runs and scoring the game-winning run on an RBI-single by senior Ashley Quick in the ninth.
Members of the sophomore class also produced during the fall season. Erin St. Ledger went 6-for-11 with three RBIs and a double in three games against Louisburg, Campbell and Elon. Fellow sophomore Beth Nolan went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs in two games against Louisburg and UNC Greensboro.
ECU also received some outstanding pitching performances. Four pitchers combined to hold opposing hitters to a .228 batting average and 17 runs. Pirate pitchers recorded a better than 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 51 innings pitched.
Junior Keli Harrell picked up four wins and a save in five appearances, striking out 18 batters in 17 innings. She fanned six batters in her first appearance against Francis Marion and then struck out six more against Campbell.
Freshman Brooke Swann struck out five batters in four innings when she made her debut against UNCW. Swann earned her lone win against Louisburg as she combined with senior Stephanie Hayes to tossed a two-hit shutout. Swann struck out five batters in four innings against LC.
Hayes tossed one inning of relief against Elon to pick up the victory in the final game of the fall.
Hayes' classmate, Brentley Bridgeforth, made two appearances and held opponents to a .188 average in nine innings of work.
