April 07, 2026 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team fell in extras on Tuesday night, losing to NC State 5-2, in nine innings at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Kanisha Anderson led the Pirates (24-18) with two hits but ECU had many opportunities to add more runs and win the game, leaving 11 runners on base.
The Pirates scored first in the bottom of the first inning after Trinity Nichols' sac bunt scored Anderson but NC State tied things up in the top of the second with a solo home run from Taryn Massey.
An NC State error in the bottom of the fourth followed by a sac bunt from Hannah Evans put the Pirates in scoring position and Macey Ciamillo would take advantage with an RBI double that gave ECU a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.
The Wolfpack eventually tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth as both teams' defenses and pitching continued to hold up going into the seventh inning.
After a one-two-three top of the seventh on defense, Anderson led off with a triple to put the game-winning run just 60 feet away. ECU was unable to convert as Anderson was thrown out at home plate on a fielder's choice with the Pirates stranding two runners.
ECU quickly dispatched NC State's batters again in the top of the eighth and the Pirates once again found themselves with the game-winning run at third base but could not capitalize.
NC State broke the tie in the top of the ninth with a two-run single and a sac fly to take a 5-2 lead and the Pirates grounded into a double play in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Morgen Talley (10-6) earned the win in relief while Julia Apostolakos (12-7) pitched a career-high 8.2 innings in the loss.
