Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Campbell
February 05, 2005 | Softball
ECU won game one of the doubleheader, 1-0, in 10 innings behind the pitching of sophomore Keli Harrell. The right-hander struck out 15 Camel batters in 10 innings of work, allowing just one hit on the day. Freshman outfielder Beth Nolan won it for the Pirates in the bottom of the tenth, singling in senior Kate Manuse and sealing the extra-innings victory.
Campbell's lone hit came off the bat of catcher Chelsea Gates in the fifth inning, breaking up Harrell's no-hit attempt. Campbell starting pitcher Kelly Weaver went the distance, striking out six batters while allowing only four hits on the day.
The Pirates bats came alive in the second game, scoring early and often. After plating one run in the bottom of the first, ECU took advantage of some timely hitting and Campbell miscues to score four runs in the second. Senior shortstop Leigh Savoy hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth to score the Pirates' sixth and final run. Savoy and fellow senior Mandi Nichols each collected two hits on the day to lead all Pirate batters.
Junior Brently Bridgeforth took the mound in game two, collecting the win by throwing six innings, allowing one earned run on six hits while collecting four strikeouts. Junior Stephanie Hayes finished the game for the Pirates, striking out two and walking two in one inning of work.
Campbell (0-2) was led on the day by Gates, who collected four hits in the doubleheader to lead all Camels.
ECU will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 12 when the team travels to Atlanta, Ga. to play in the Georgia State Invitational. The Pirates will face Tennessee Tech and Charleston Southern on Feb. 12 and Georgia State on the Feb. 13.
