
Pirates Sweep Twinbill Against Houston

ECU improves to 40-8 overall and 6-2 in conference play while the Cougars fall to 18-17 overall and 3-5 in conference with the pair of losses against ECU.
In the first game of the day, Houston jumped to a early lead scoring two runs in the first and adding two more in the second.
The Pirate bats came to life in the third, plating four runs on a grand-slam home run by senior Kate Manuse. Manuse finished the game 1-for-3 with four RBI. Freshman Paige Bagget plated two more runs in the fourth on a pinch-hit double, pushing the lead to three. Junior Brenlty Bridgeforth picked up the win for the Pirates going 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits to improve her record to 12-1. Sophomore Keli Harrell picked up the save going 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out six.
In the second game of the day, the Pirates jumped on the Cougars early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Mandi Nichols provided four of the six runs on a grand-slam homerun to left, giving the Pirates the early lead. ECU added their fifth run of the game on a RBI single off the bat of junior Ashley Quick.
The Cougars answered in the top half of the third with a three-run shot to left-center of the bat of freshman Angel Shamblin to cut the lead to two.
Harrell picked up the win for the Pirates going the distance giving up three runs on four hits and striking out four.
The Pirates return to action Saturday when the team wraps up the weekend series with Houston beginning at 11 a.m. at the ECU Softball Field.
