Pirates Sweep Series With Win Over Cougars
March 26, 2005 | Softball
The Cougars started the scoring in the top of the third with a RBI single by Angel Shamblin to score Kim Nesloney from second. The Pirates fought back in the bottom half of the third plating three. Seniors Kate Manuse and Mandi Nichols provided the power for the Pirates. Manuse ripped an RBI double off the wall in left-center to score Krista Jessup from first. Nichols followed with a two-run blast over the centerfield wall to push the ECU lead to two. Houston plated a late run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to one but it was not enough as ECU was able to hold on for the victory.
Junior Stephanie Hayes (9-1) got the win going six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Sophomore Keli Harrell came in to seal the deal, throwing one complete inning, allowing no runs on no hits with three strike outs. Harrell earned her sixth save of the year.
The Pirates will be back in action Wednesday when the team travels to Raleigh to take on rival N.C. State beginning at 3 p.m.
