HOUSTON, Texas -- East Carolina used first- and second-place finishes by sophomore hammer throwers Eric Frasure and Terrance Myers to race out to the lead after the first day of the 2005 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Carl Lewis/Tom Tellez Track and Field Complex late Thursday night.
The Pirates collected 21 points during the initial day, topping second-place Marquette's standing by four points and third-place Louisville by five.

Frasure and Myers both earned All-Conference USA honors after turning in tosses of 61.50 and 58.25 meters, respectively. In addition, both marks surpassed NCAA East Regional qualification standards. Senior Mayso Porch gave the Pirates another three points with a sixth-place finish in the same event after recording a throw of 49.75.
The Lady Pirates benefited from Chelsea Salisbury's 43.36-meter effort in the javelin throw which earned the junior a second-place standing, all-conference designation and qualification to NCAA regional competition. ECU also received four points for Johanna Allen's fifth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run (37:21.89) and one tally for Emily Thompson's eight-place result after a career-best effort in the hammer throw (46.05 meters).
