With the loss East Carolina dropped to 55-19 overall, while USF improved to 40-25 overall. Both teams will find out their postseason fates Sunday night when the field of 64 teams for the NCAA Women's College Wolrd Series will be announced.
USF first baseman Carmela Liwag drove in the game's only run with a two-out RBI-single in the third. Chrstine Chapman singled with one out and then moved into scoring position with a swipe of second base before scoring on Liwag's hit.
The Pirates had chance to even things up in the fourth after Kate Manuse and Leigh Savoy hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt, but were stranded as Spence, C-USA Freshman of the Year, struck out the side to halt the ECU threat.
Manuse also singled to lead off the sixth, but didn't advance as Spence struck out the next two batters and relief pitcher Kasey Cash forced Erin St. Ledger to ground out to end the inning. Manuse finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Alison Monce kept the Pirates' hopes alive in the seventh with a one-out single, but the next two batters each grounded out to put an end to ECU's stay at the tournament.
Harrell became the school's all-time strikeout leader by fanning Carly Griffin to end the fourth inning for her 496th career strikeout. Her eight strikeouts today bring her career total to 499.
