GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team netted three second-half goals to record its second win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Campbell at Bunting Field Friday afternoon.
The Pirates (2-5-0) fell behind early when Mary Nitz scored the first of her two goals in the sixth minute of play from 25 yards out beating keeper Amber Campbell (Frederick, Md.).
ECU would respond quickly when senior Meghan McCallion (Long Island, NY) scored the equalizer in the 15th minute off her own shot that ricocheted of a Campbell (2-4-0) defender. For McCallion it was her third goal of the season and the 33rd of her career, which tied former Pirate great Amanda Duffy as ECU's all-time goal scorer.
After the intermission, the Pirates came out with three goals to put the game out of reach. Freshman Sarah Biggar (Coral Springs, Fla.) collected her first collegiate goal in the 59th minute off a Jami Dickerson (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) throw-in that was headed by Melissa Penney (Damascus, Md.).
Fifteen minutes later junior Allison Howell (Advance, N.C.) recorded her first goal of the season and the game-winner off a Penney corner kick to put the Pirates up 3-1. With four minutes to play, senior Kate Lowe (Raleigh, N.C.) received a pass from McCallion to notch her first goal of the season and her first goal as a Pirate.
Campbell got the games final goal at the 87:50 mark when Nitz stole a pass from a Pirate defender and blasted a shot from 20 yards out.
"I thought we played well in the second half and wore Campbell down physically," said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. "There was some sloppy play in the first half, but our team over came that and started to play well. Sarah (Biggar), Melissa (Penney) and Kate (Lowe) all had a great game for us and stepped up when we needed some energy today."
ECU will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 18 when they host Francis Marion at 2 p.m.
