GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team dropped its first home match of the season Wednesday afternoon falling to Furman, 3-2 at Bunting Field.
The Paladins (5-4-0) got on the board in the 26th minute of play when Andrea Morrison's shot was blocked by Pirate keeper Heather Johnston (Newport, N.C.) and Katharine Kelley was there to put in the rebound.
Furman struck again in the 32nd minute when Morrison received a pass from Katie Tucker for a break-away goal. The Paladins would add another goal in the 36th minute when Nicky Darling and Tucker connected on a series of passes before finding Gena Villari wide open from 20 yards out to take a 3-0 lead into intermission.
The Pirates (3-6-0) came out aggressive and focused in the second-half netting a pair of goals in the 52nd and 54th minute. Sophomore Patty Pierce (Columbia, S.C.) scored her first goal of the season, a header, when Meghan McCallion (Long Island, N.Y.) placed a perfect ball into the upper left corner of the goal just out of reach from Furman keeper Andie Hinshaw.
Two minutes later McCallion received a pass from Allison Howell (Advance, N.C.) beating the Furman keeper one-on-one for the Pirates second goal.
ECU had ample opportunities to tie the game in the second period, recording five shots and three corner kicks, but the Paladins defense was to tough on the afternoon.
Pirate keeper Amber Campbell (Frederick, Md.), who started the game, was forced out at the 6:47 mark when she and Morrison collided in the goalie box. Campbell was able to return in the second-half recording five saves and not allowing a goal.
The Pirates will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 25 when the host Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. at Bunting Field.
