GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior forward Melissa Penney scored a pair of goals Sunday afternoon as East Carolina notched its first win of the season over instate foe Western Carolina, 2-0, at Bunting Field.
The Pirates (1-3-0) dominated the game from the outset recording eight shots in the first half and while allowing none. With less than 10 minutes left in the first half, Penney (Damascus, Md.) scored the game-winner on a corner kick that flew past Alesha Row.
ECU's defensive unit, which welcomed back sophomores Patty Pierce (Columbia, S.C.) and Kat Norris (Houston, Texas) into the starting lineup, completely shot down the Catamounts (3-1-0) in the second half allowing one shot on goal.
In the 77th minute of play, Penney netted her second goal of the day when fellow senior Meghan McCallion (Long Island, N.Y.) served a cross pass and Penney dove to head the ball into the net.
Freshman Amber Campbell (Frederick, Md.) continued her stellar play in goal collecting one save and recoding her first collegiate win and shutout.
"It was big for us to get a win today," said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. "I thought we played a sound game and our defense was great. Melissa (Penney) had an unbelievable game, and we have been waiting for her to break out."
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, Sept.9, when they travel to College Station, Texas to face nationally ranked Texas A&M of the Big 12 conference.
