
Frasure, Small Lead Men's Track at Gator Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Junior Eric Frasure captured his second straight weight throw title with a NCAA provisional qualifying effort of 19.70 meters while freshman Brandon Small highlighted the East Carolina's sprint performances with a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.91 to lead the Pirates during the Gator Invitational at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Saturday.
Frasure, who also recorded an eight-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 15.70, earned top honors in the weight throw at the Virginia Tech Invitational Jan. 14 with a toss of 20.11 meters. Junior Terrance Myers stood third in the event with a personal-best effort of 18.39 meters.
In addition to Small's performance in the 400 meters, senior Hector Cotto turned in a third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.49, just .03 shy of equaling his career-best. Freshman Jerek Hewett followed a successful collegiate debut at Virginia Tech last week (missing NCAA provisional qualification by .10 in the 60-meter dash with a clip of 6.82) with another strong performance which included seventh-place result in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.42.
Other notable men's efforts include a fourth-place standing by freshman Christopher Belfiore in the 3,000-meter run (9:19.00) and a pair of ninth-place finishes by freshman Kevin Thompson (200 meters/22.12) and senior Kyle Yunaska (800 meters/personal-best 1:55.62). Freshman Akintunde Abisogun helped ECU's showing in the field events with a sixth-place standing in the long jump with a leap of 7.04 meters.
The Pirates will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the Liberty On Track Open in Lynchburg, Va.
