
Men's Track Opens Indoor Season at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Junior Eric Frasure surpassed an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a weight throw of 20.11 meters while senior Kyle Yunaska and freshman Brandon Small earned first-place sectional finishes to highlight East Carolina's season-opening indoor track effort at the Virginia Tech Invitational Saturday.
Frasure, who set a school record in the weight throw event with a toss of 20.66 meters last season, earned a first-place standing with his performance while also easily besting the NCAA provisional qualification mark of 19.00. Junior Terrance Myers finished third in the event with a throw of 16.84 meters.
Yunaska turned in a 1:55.83 time in the 800-meter run to capture his sectional heat while Small made his collegiate debut with a 1:06.58 clip in the 500-meter run to earn similar honors. In addition, Small also tallied a runner-up standing in his heat during the 400-meter dash (49.20)
Senior Hector Cotto, ECU's current record-holder in the 60-meter hurdles, stood third in the same event with a time of 8.14 after previously logging 8.09 and 8.13 marks in semifinal and preliminary heats, respectively. Freshman Jerek Hewett, who experienced action as a member of the Pirates' football program last fall after winning a Junior National Track title in the 100 meters during the summer, was clocked at 6.82 during a second-place finish in the semis of the 60-meter dash before advancing to the finals where he finished fifth (6.91).
Other notable ECU sectional heat performances were turned in by freshman Kevin Thompson (200 meters/2nd/22.44), senior Reggie Williams (200 meters/2nd/22.21), sophomore Andrew Barber (400 meters/2nd/50.38), sophomore Jason Diehl (800 meters/2nd/1:57.48) and freshman William Collins (mile run/2nd/4:21.17).
The Pirates will compete at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., Saturday, Jan. 21.
