
Pirates Fare Well at Liberty's On Track Open

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Senior Kyle Yunaska established a new personal record with a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run while junior Eric Frasure recorded his third consecutive NCAA provisional qualifying weight throw effort to lead the East Carolina track and field squads at the On Track Open Invitational inside the Tolsma Indoor Track Center Saturday.
Freshman Danielle Eiler highlighted the women's performance by posting a new career-best in the shot put with a toss of 13.19 meters to earn a runner-up standing. In all, the Lady Pirates registered eight top five finishes.
Yunaska turned in a time of 2:32.36 to capture the 1,000-meter event while Frasure completed a throw of 19.66 meters, which exceeded the NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 19.00. For Frasure, the effort marked the third-straight time he had surpassed the mark after logging 20.11- and 19.70-meter throws at the Virginia Tech Invitational and Gator Invitational, respectively. The Charlotte native also estabished a new career-best with a shot put performance of 16.05 meters to earn a second-place finish.
Freshmen Brandon Small (49.43, 400 meters) and William Collins (4:25.77, one mile) also picked up runner-up standings while senior Hector Cotto joined four rookies as fourth-place finishers with a 7.97 clip in the 60-meter hurdles. Included among the freshmen highlights were Jerek Hewett's 6.87 time in the 60-meter dash, Kevin Thompson's mark of 22.30 in the 200 meters, Andrew Jenkins' new personal record of 15:56.96 in the 5,000-meter event and Akintunde Abisogun's long jump of 6.88 meters.
Junior James McLellan (5th/4:31.54) and sophomore Jason Diehl (6th/1:57.36) tallied new personal records in the one mile and 800-meter run, respectively.
In addition to Eiler's performance, freshman Jaslyn Grullon also turned in a career-best effort with a 9.31 time in the 60-meter hurdles.
Sophomore Portia Baker (57.80) and senior Terri Davenport (58.01) finished second and third in the 400 meters while pole vaulters Amy Hart (3.60 meters) and Lindsey Rosales (season-high 3.60) each stood second.
Other Lady Pirate performances of note include sophomore Aisha Bilal-Mack, who logged a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters (2:19.29), and freshman Hollie Brooks, who was fifth in the same event with a time of 2:28.66. The 4x400 relay squad, which consisted of Baker, Bilal-Mack, Davenport and Grullon, booked a third-place standing (4:00.12).
Both ECU indoor track programs will return to action next weekend with split-squad participation in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational (Feb. 3-4) and Carolina Invitational (Feb. 4).
