GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jami Dickerson scored her second goal in as many games but it wasn't enough as the East Carolina women's soccer team dropped a Conference USA match to UCF 2-1 Friday afternoon at Bunting Field. Kristin Bilby and Brianna Schooley both scored their first goals of the season to lead the Golden Knights. ECU was the more physical of the squads, committing 13 fouls to UCF's six.
UCF found its offense in the second half as it scored two goals to secure the victory. Bilby started the scoring at 68:50 as she took a cross from Roberta Pelarigo and headed the ball just past the outstretched arms of Campbell. The Golden Knights added an insurance goal at 78:41 when Brianna Schooley was the beneficiary of a deflection off of the ECU defense. She took the loose ball and slotted it past Campbell.
The first half did not feature any scoring but it did provide some quality scoring chances for both teams. Just 11 minutes into the game, Kristin Bilby floated a shot over goalkeeper Amber Campbell, but the ball hit the crossbar and the Lady Pirates were able to clear it out of the box. Freshman Sarah Kirkley nearly put ECU on top in the 31st minute when her crossing attempt, intended for open teammates on the far post, was snagged out of mid-air by Golden Knight goalkeeper Jennifer Manis.
The Lady Pirates attempted a comeback in the late stages of the match. Jami Dickerson scored off of a Kirkley corner and a quick pass by Patty Pierce at 86:50. ECU failed to get off another shot in the last three minutes.
"UCF is a finely tuned, athletic and skilled team," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We have to forget this match quickly and focus our attention to Southern Miss on Sunday."
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Sunday as they take on Conference USA rival Southern Miss at Bunting Field. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
