MIAMI, FLA. - The East Carolina women's golf team started the 2006 Spring season with a second place finish today after firing a 54-hole team score of 896 at the Papa Johns Collegiate. The tournament was being played at the par-72, 6,317-yard at Don Shula's Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Fla.
The Pirates (52-20-3) placed three players in the top-13 with sophomore Emelie Lind (223) leading the way finishing tied for fifth. For the event, Lind finished with seven birdies and 36 pars and recorded rounds of 74, 72 and 77.
Freshman Lene Krog (224) finished tied for tenth after a third round two-over par 74 and finished with 37 pars during the tournament. Heidi Helliesen finished with a 225 after rounds 77, 73 and 75 for a 13th place finish.
Fellow Pirate golfer Jamie Quinn (230) recorded a career-best round of 71 on Tuesday to move up from 48th place into a tie for 25th, while Jessica Hauser finished tied for 33rd with a tournament score of 232.
USF's Christina Jones (214) took home tournament honors after a final round 71 to finish seven strokes ahead of Virginia's Leah Wigger (221). Alabama's Jenny Suh (222) and Lorraine Ballerano (222) finished tied for third, while four other golfers tied with Lind in fifth place.
North Carolina State (892) increased their lead by two strokes taking home the team title. ECU (896) finished second, No. 12 Virginia (900) came in third, followed by host school Miami (Fla.) and USF.
"The team played real well this week and I'm excited with the outcome," said first-year head coach Kim Lewellen. "Kevin (Williams) left this program in great shape and we have the sky is the limit for what this team can accomplish this season."
The Pirates will take a few weeks off before heading to Pinehurst, N.C. for the Pinehurst Invitational which will start Mar. 12.
