MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- East Carolina took advantage of a one-out walk and throwing error in the fifth inning to score a 1-0 victory over Dayton at the CofC Cougar Classic on Sunday.
ECU improved to 10-3 overall, while Dayton fell to 1-2 on the season.
Freshman Sarah Bibee drove in the game's lone run with a two-out single to plate senior Alison Monce from second base. Monce advanced to second on a throwing error by the Dayton catcher after drawing a one-out walk.
Junior Keli Harrell (5-3) earned the victory in relief after entering the game with one out and runners at second and third in the top of fourth. Harrell induced a ground ball to second base, which second baseman Erin St. Ledger cleanly fielded and tossed Katie Jordan out at the plate trying to score from third base. Harrell then struck out the following batter to keep the game scoreless.
She yielded one hit and struck out five of the 13 batters she faced without walking anybody.
ECU starting pitcher Brently Bridgeforth lasted just 3.1 innings as she struggled with her control, walking six batters.
The ECU defense put an end to a pair of Dayton scoring threats in the first and second innings. Shortstop Ashley Quick threw out Christine Eggers at the plate for the second out of the first inning and then tossed out the lead runner at third base for the first out of the second.
Bridgeforth then retired the next two batters she faced in the second to end the threat.
Melissa Myher (1-1) took the loss for Dayton, surrendering four hits and issuing two walks in a complete game effort.
