
Frasure, Small Key Pirate Track Split Squad Performance

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Junior Eric Frasure enhanced his earlier success in the weight throw with a school-record effort while freshman Brandon Small established a new personal standard in the 400 meters to lead the East Carolina men's track program during split-squad participation at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., and the Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill over the weekend.
Frasure, who has met NCAA provisional qualification in all four of his throws this season, surpassed his previous ECU record of 20.66 meters set last year with a toss of 20.94. In additon to earning a fifth-place standing at the Husker Invitational, the effort also currently ranks as the 10th-best nationally.
Small recorded a personal-best time of 48.16 in the 400-meter dash to finish second in the preliminary round before turning in a seventh-place overall standing at 49.34. Other notable performances at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln were turned in by Reggie Williams in the 60-meter dash (personal-record 6.88, sixth-place preliminary finish), Hector Cotto in the 60-meter hurdles (8.01/fourth place) and Kevin Thompson in the 200 meters (career-best 22.12/14th-place prelim finish).
At Eddie Smith Fieldhouse in Chapel Hill, Christopher Belfiore set a new personal record in the 3,000-meter run wih a clip of 9:07.05 (19th) while Derrick Carr (13.31 meters/10th) and Ryan Akins (12.09/14th) produced career-longs in the triple jump. Former football standout Gary Freeman stood fifth in the shot put with a performance of 14.30 meters and completed his first collegiate weight throw at 13.54 to earn a sixth-place result.
The Pirates will be back in action next weekend at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup at the Multi-Sport Facility at University Park on the Penn State University campus.
