
Softball Loses One-Run Game To Penn State

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Hollee Haines and Kayce Zelinski each hit a solo home run to give Penn State a 2-1 win over East Carolina in the 2006 Pirate Invitational here Saturday.
ECU (20-15) scored first, plating its lone run in the top of the third inning. Joyce Roodenburg singled to lead off the inning, but remained at first base as the next two batters were retired. Freshman Vanessa Moreno then delivered a two-out double to left field, scoring Roodenburg from first.
Zelinksi homered to lead off the Nittany Lions' half of the third, tying the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied through the next 2.5 innings, before Penn State (17-3) surged ahead on Haines' home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Beth Nolan singled with two outs in the ECU seventh, but was unable to move into scoring position as PSU pitcher Missy Beseres induced a ground ball to end the game.
Beseres (8-2) scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out six without issuing a base-on-balls.
Moreno collected two of the Pirates' five hits, while Jen Williams and Jen Acunto each recorded a pair of hits for the Nittany Lions.
ECU starting pitcher Brently Bridgeforth (3-3) was tagged with the loss surrendering eight hits in 5.1 innings, including both home runs.
The Pirates will face Buffalo later tonight before its rematch against No. 6 California on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game against Buffalo is tentatively scheduled for 8 p.m.
