GREENVILLE, N.C. - Junior Eric Frasure will be East Carolina University's lone representative at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.
Frasure, who earned qualification in the 35-pound weight throw event with a school-record effort of 21.62 meters at the UNC Last Chance Meet in Chapel Hill March 1, will be making his first appearance on a national stage after successfully defending his Conference USA title with a toss of 20.73 on Feb. 24 in Houston. His quest for a national title will take place Saturday at 3:00 p.m. (EST) inside Walker Pavilion.
In all, the Hopewell (Charlotte) High School product has captured six weight throw titles at seven different venues and eclipsed his own school record on two occasions during the course of the 2006 indoor campaign. In addition to his C-USA championship and UNC Last Chance automatic qualifying performances, Frasure also picked up first-place finishes at the Virginia Tech Invitational (20.11), Gator Invitational (19.70), Liberty On Track Invitational (19.66) and Penn State Challenge Cup (20.55). Prior to his record-setting throw in Chapel Hill, he also registered a 20.94-meter effort during a fifth-place standing at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Feb. 4.
Frasure's qualifying throw of 21.62 meters currently ranks eighth nationally, 2.01 meters behind top-seeded Spyridon Jullien of Virginia Tech (23.63).
