GREENVILLE, N.C.--- ECU opened its first-ever series with C-USA newcomer by posting a 5-0 win over its newest conference rival.
Beth Nolan gave ECU a 1-0 lead in the second lifting a fly ball to deep center, scoring Paige Baggett from third.
The Pirates added to their lead with two runs in the third when Miner third baseman Amber Bennett elected to attempt to catch Vanessa Moreno straying off third base. However, her throw bag to the bag went into the dug out allowing two base runners to score.
Following a pair of UTEP pitching changes in the sixth, senior Alison Monce delivered the knockout blow with a two-run double down the third base line.
ECU collected seven this lead by Erin St. Ledger's two base knocks.
Pitcher Keli Harrell (18-13) allowed just three hits and struck out seven, while tossing her seventh complete game shutout of the season. Veronica Flournoy (9-8) was saddled with the loss for UTEP.
