IRVING, Texas --- East Carolina senior swimmer Sarah Hunt and junior volleyball player Heidi Krug have each been named recipients of the 2005-06 Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards. The awards are presented to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport and are based upon academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service.
Hunt has achieved a 3.73 cumulative GPA as an interior design major, while Krug has maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA as a biology major. Each student-athlete earned all-conference honors this past season with Hunt earning all-league accolades for the fourth time in her career, while Krug was recognized with the all-conference honors for the first time. Each was involved with a variety of community service activities.
Tulsa produced a conference-best four Scholar Athlete Award winners, Rice and UTEP had three student-athletes selected, while four other schools had two recipients apiece. Southern Miss senior baseball player Marc Maddox is the only repeat winner. Nine of C-USA's 12 institutions produced at least one scholar athlete winner, with co-winners named in men's golf, softball and swimming/diving.
