GREENVILLE, S.C. - The East Carolina Women's soccer team got exactly what they needed after losing two heartbreaking losses last weekend, by defeating Furman 2-1 in double overtime. Amy Szilard scored from 35-yards out past goal keeper Briana Da Mota in the 106th minute of play.
Furman (2-6) managed to take the lead at the beginning of the second half when Anna Betton got the assist from both Rachel Fry and Gena Villari. Thirty minutes later, Jessica Swanson scored her second goal of the season after she ran down the field and got a great assist from Kelley Lightfoot on a crossing pattern. Swanson slid on the wet grass past the goalkeeper and was able to knock it into the back of the net.
"Furman played a really tough game out there in today's match," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We had a lot of players playing out of position due to injuries but they all managed to step up and make the plays that were needed."
The Lady Pirates are now 1-1 in overtime play. They lost their first game of the season against Old Dominion 1-0 in overtime.
East Carolina will now travel to Florence, S.C. to play Francis Marion at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
