GREENSBORO, NC - Four East Carolina women's golfers recorded top 15 finishes as the Pirates claimed their second team title in three events Tuesday afternoon at the UNCG-Starmount Forest Fall Classic. The event was held at the par-71, 6,265-yard Starmount course, the former home of the PGA's Greater Greensboro Open.
The Pirates, who set a school record with a round of 284 on Monday, carded a team total of 299 to hold on for the win. Host school UNC-Greensboro (591) finished second eight shots behind, while Elon and Florida International (600) claimed a share of third and Miami (601) took fifth.
Emelie Lind held off a late charge to win the individual title with a one-under 141, carding a 71 on Tuesday. She fended off High Point's Ann Marie Dalton, who shot a 69 to finish one shot back, and Miami's Jessica Steward, who recorded the low round of the tournament with a 68 to finish two shots back along with Campbell's Sandra Angulo. For Lind, it was her first collegiate win, third top ten and ninth top 20 finish.
Fellow golfer Abby Bools finished fifth with a 36-hole score of 144 (71-73) claiming her second top five finish and third top 20 of the season. Amber Littman (70-79=149) and Ana Maria Puche (73-76=149) claimed a share of 14th place, while freshman Colleen Estes tied for 36th.
"We struggled early on today, but I think we found out a lot about our team," said head coach Kevin Williams. "This was a great win for us today. To see how well we have performed in the first three tournaments of the season, I am really pleased with where we are at. I'm extremely happy for Emelie in winning her first collegiate event."
A total of 69 players consisting of 11 teams and 14 individuals competed in the 36-hole event.
ECU (27-14-0) returns to action on Monday, Oct. 29 when they travel south to participate in the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C.
