GREENVILLE, N.C. - Back to back goals by Ashley Berra lifted Memphis to a 2-1 victory over East Carolina Sunday afternoon at Bunting Field. With the win, the Tigers earned a share of the 2007 C-USA regular season title, finishing the regular season with a 14-3-1 mark, 7-1-1 in league play. ECU finishes the regular season with a 9-4-5 mark, 3-3-3 in C-USA action.
East Carolina finished the season with an 8-1-1 mark at home, going undefeated into the today's game.
After a scoreless first half, it was Berra who got the Tigers on the board as she sent in a ball from Kate Murphy with 38:30 to play, giving the Tigers the 1-0 lead. Berra scored again two minutes later, with her unassisted goal sailing over Amber Campbell's head for the 2-0 lead with 36:20 on the clock.
Bailey Wilcox connected on a pass from Jessica Swanson to cut the Memphis lead to one, at 2-1, with one minute remaining in the game. ECU could not put together another goal, as the Tigers went on to the 2-1 victory. Memphis recorded 10 total shots, four on goal while the Pirates had eight shots, five on goal.
"Memphis is a great team," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. It is no coincidence that they are co-champions this season. I thought we had a great group effort out there today, we battled as hard as we could. We gave up a sloppy goal, on the second goal. All that is behind us now, as we have to get ready for UCF in the conference tournament."
East Carolina will travel to El Paso, Texas this week for the 2007 Conference USA Championships. The Pirates will face top seeded UCF on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 2:00 p.m. The winner advances to Friday's semi-final game against the winner of the No. 5 vs. No. 4 seed game.
