BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State benefited from a pair of three-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles slots and secured the doubles point to hand East Carolina a 5-2 non-conference setback Saturday afternoon at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers captured four of six singles events but Dimitar Dimitrov's 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Matt Peeler at No. 3 and Lee Floyd's 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Bryan Oakley at No. 4 proved to be the difference in the tightly-contested match.
Appalachian State opened play by earning the doubles point after wins by tandems Ryan Brookshaw/Trent Constance (9-8 over Aleksey Kochetov/Henrique Viana) and David Doverspike/Floyd (8-6 against Peeler/Brian Walters).
The Pirates tallied their pair of points when Kochetov outlasted Brookshaw 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 in a No. 2 position meeting and Sam McSpadden cruised past Doverspike 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.
In addition to Dimitrov's and Floyd's success, ASU also recorded victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots when Constance defeated Viana (6-2, 6-1) and Peter Jacobs handled Stephen Whitwell (7-6, 6-2), respectively.
East Carolina (2-3) will conclude its two-match swing through western North Carolina when it meets UNC-Asheville Sunday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
