GREENVILLE, N.C. - On day one of the Baymont Inn & Suites Pirate Classic, the Pirates came out with a split, losing to Towson 1-0 and defeating Appalachian State 2-0 at the ECU Softball Field.
An error by East Carolina (7-4) first baseman Jessica Johnson in the third inning with one out allowed Megan Zwoyer to reach base. After Erica Dresel advanced Zwoyer to second on a groundout to Kaui Tom at shortstop, Jen Hastings delivered an RBI-double into the centerfield gap, giving the Tigers the only run they would need.
ECU was riding a three-game winning streak before falling to the Tigers. Brooke Swann pitched her second consecutive complete game of the season and allowed one unearned run and two hits. The Pirates got hits by Erin St. Ledger and Vanessa Moreno but could not put a run across the plate.
The Pirates sent out Toni Paisley in the second game of the day and she responded by pitching her first complete game and shutout the Mountaineers 2-0. Paisley scattered five hits, while walking one batter.
East Carolina generated a run in the second inning and fourth inning on a passed ball and a wild pitch, respectively. Three passed balls in the second inning scored Vanessa Moreno who reached base on a throwing error by Robin Bronson. Jessica Johnson reached base to lead off the fourth when she was hit by a pitch. Johnson would later advance to third base after Vanessa Moreno was hit by a pitch and Beth Nolan sacrificed the two over on a ball back to the pitcher. Johnson would score one batter later on the wild pitch.
"We struggled to hit the ball today," associate head coach Natalie Kozlowski said. "We need to get better on our pitch selection and be patient at the plate. On the bright side, our pitching was phenomenal. Toni (Paisley) and Brooke (Swann) both pitched great games."
The Baymont Inn & Suites Pirate Classic will continue Saturday at 9 a.m. with Appalachian State taking on St. John's. The Pirates will resume play at 11 a.m. as they host St. John's.
