GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Pirates wrapped up the Baymont Inn & Suites Pirate Classic on Sunday with an 8-1 win over Appalachian State in the championship round at the ECU softball field.
East Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning off starter Yancy Moose. Charina Sumner delivered a two out RBI single to centerfield that scored Sarah Bibee and Stacey Andrews. Erin St. Ledger would then single to left field and advance Sumner to third base. Paige Baggett picked up the third RBI of the inning when she hit a double to drive in Sumner.
Keli Harrell gave up her first hit in 11 1/3 innings in the fourth inning on a slow ground ball to Cristen Aona at third base. Harrell would also end up giving up her first earned run in 26 innings of work in the third inning. The ace pitcher threw five innings and gave up three hits before being replaced by Toni Paisley. Paisley would go on to finish the remaining two innings and now allow a hit, while striking out the side in the seventh inning.
"Normally when we win a tournament we give the award or trophy to a deserving individual on the team," head coach Tracey Kee stated. "This tournament was a complete team effort with how we battled back and everyone on the team deserves it."
The Pirates will stay at home and play UNC Chapel Hill on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before hosting the Holiday Inn Express Pirate Clash from March 2-4. Binghamton, Delaware, Fordham, James Madison and Vermont will all be participants.
