GREENVILLE, N.C. - A two-run homerun in the sixth inning by Jennifer Jacobs off ECU reliever Toni Paisley gave UNC a 3-1 lead and the win. Jacobs accounted for all three of the RBI for UNC (9-8) on two homeruns. She hit a solo homerun in the second inning off starter Keli Harrell.
The Pirates (9-6) battled back from a 1-0 deficit to score a run of their own in the fifth inning off Tar Heels reliever Lisa Norris. Cristen Aona reached first base on an error by the shortstop with one out. Kaui Tom's single to center field put runners at first and second. Christina Merrida then pinch ran for Aona and scored two batters later when Erin St. Ledger hit a ball to the shortstop that was misplayed and went into left field.
Harrell started for the Pirates and came out of the game with two outs in the sixth inning and a runner at third base before being replaced by Paisley. Harrell would come back into the game two batters later and ended up finishing the game with a total of eight strikeouts.
East Carolina had a chance to score in the fourth inning but Sarah Bibee was thrown out at home plate from center field. ECU registered four hits and walked four times while leaving seven runners on base.
The Pirates will play in the Holiday Inn Express Pirate Clash beginning Friday at 12 p.m. when they face Vermont. They will also play Delaware (Fri. 4 p.m.), Binghamton (Sat. 12 p.m.) and James Madison (Sat. 4 p.m.) before tournament play begins on Sunday.
