GREENVILLE, N.C. - Senior Keli Harrell and freshman Toni Paisley pitched back-to-back complete game shutouts in a 3-0 and 1-0 win over UCF in the first two games of a three game series to start conference play. Harrell recorded 11 strikeouts, placing her five punch-out's shy of the career Conference USA record.
The Pirates (18-6, 2-0 C-USA) scored all three of their runs in the first game in the third inning. Cristen Aona led off the inning with a single down the left field line. Joyce Roodenburg advanced Aona to second base on a sacrifice bunt. After walking Kaui Tom, Charina Sumner delivered her C-USA leading fifth triple of the season to the center field gap, scoring Tom and Aona. Two batters later, Paige Baggett singled up the middle to score Sumner.
Harrell allowed one double over seven innings and recorded her 100th strikeout on the season. She lowered her ERA to 0.90, which is best in the conference.
In game two, a throwing error on a stolen base by UCF (16-11, 0-2 C-USA) catcher Cici Alvarez in the bottom of the first inning, allowed Kaui Tom to score all the way from first base and give ECU the lone run they would need.
Toni Paisley started for the Pirates in the second game of the doubleheader and allowed no runs on four hits, while fanning five. Paisley stranded five UCF base runners in five different innings. In the top of the sixth inning, UCF had a runner at third base for the fist time all day but a ground ball to Jessica Johnson at first base ended the threat.
"Allison Kime (UCF pitcher) is an excellent pitcher and she showed how good she can be today," associate head coach Natalie Kozlowski said. "We caught a break in the second game on the throwing error, but we pitched great today as well and we were able to score enough runs in the first game to pick up the first of two conference wins."
ECU will look to win ten in a row as they host UCF Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at the ECU Softball Field.
