RICHMOND, Va. - East Carolina's top-seeded doubles tandem of Aleksey Kochetov and Stephen Whitwell captured an 8-6 win to clinch a pivotal doubles point and lift the Pirates to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Richmond Thursday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
The triumph snapped ECU's two-match losing skid and improved the Pirates' overall spring ledger to 7-10. The Spiders, who played their final home match of the season, fell to 7-15 with the loss.
In addition to Kochetov and Whitwell's win over David Berry and Chris Louis, Matt Peeler teamed with Brian Walters to knock off UR's Doug Banker and Michael Sommer 8-4 to begin doubles play.
The Pirates and Spiders split six singles events as ECU captured the third, fourth and sixth-flight matchups. After Whitwell and Bryan Oakley tallied straight-set 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1 wins over Louis and Sommer at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, Walters secured the Pirates' team victory by bouncing back from a first-set defeat to rally past William Minter 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
East Carolina will return to the ECU Tennis Complex to open a four-match homestand beginning Saturday when it faces off against Campbell in match scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
