GREENVILLE, N.C. The Lady Pirates earned a split in the South Carolina Tournament over the weekend losing to South Carolina 2-0, before defeating Newberry 2-0.
Amber Campbell and Jen Kurowicki each split duties in both games over the weekend, while each allowing a goal.
"We struggled in transition defensively against a very athletic South Carolina team," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "For many of our players this was their first competition against a top level team. Hopefully this will show them what they need to improve on for the rest of the spring."
Sarah Kirkley, who got an assist in the win against Elon last weekend, racked up another assist on her corner kick that went off the head of Patty Pierce in the 25th minute of play. ECU would add an insurance goal 15 minutes into the second half when Blair Heffner headed home a cross from Jessica Swanson. Heffner now has two goals in three games for the Lady Pirates.
"We scored two very nice goals but overall we need to be more dangerous in the final third of the field and create more chances," said Donnenwirth.
The Pirates will continue to play on the road in Norfolk, Va. on March 23 as they face Old Dominion. ECU will return home to Bunting Field March 31 to play Barton and Wingate.
