WILMINGTON, N.C. - Visiting East Carolina won the doubles point and captured the final four singles matches to down host UNC Wilmington, 5-2, in non-conference women's tennis action Tuesday afternoon at the UNCW Courts.
ECU improved to 17-8 with the victory and avenged a 4-3 loss to the Seahawks last year in Greenville. In addition, East Carolina notched its third win in the last four outings and captured its sixth triumph over an eight-match span. UNCW had a three-match winning streak snapped and now stands 16-11 on the season.
The Lady Pirates won the doubles point when sophomore Varinia Soler converted a short volley to lift her and fellow Spaniard Mireia Gol to a tiebreaker win over UNCW's Molly Molony and Priscilla Roberts at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (6).
UNCW won the first two singles matches behind Molony's 6-1, 6-1 rout of ECU's Anca Dumitru at No. 1 singles and a 7-6 (4), 7-5 decision by Roberts over Soler at No. 2 singles. However, the Lady Pirates used wins by Luiza Borges at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3 over Lauren Isenhour) and Hannah Priest at No. 6 (6-2, 6-0 over Hartley Collins) before clinching the match on Gol's 6-2, 7-5 victory over UNCW's Kayla Schwenk at the No. 3 slot. In addition, East Carolina's Brooke Walter closed out the action by rallying past Cassie Martin 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (1) in a fourth-seeded matchup.
The Lady Pirates return home to entertain Gardner-Webb at the ECU Tennis Complex Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m. weather permitting.
