GREENVILLE, N.C. - Behind the strength of a doubles sweep and five singles victories, East Carolina posted a 6-1 non-conference win over Gardner-Webb Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The Lady Pirates (18-8), who are just one team triumph away from matching a single-season school record set a year ago, pulled out all three doubles matches to snatch the first point from the Bulldogs (8-12). Mireia Gol and Varinia Soler defeated Amy Beavers and Laura Kriett 8-2 at No. 1, Luiza Borges and Hannah Priest handed Jenny Gomez and Sara Zirndheld an 8-3 setback at No. 2 and Alex Smith and Brooke Walter recorded a similar 8-3 victory over Kasey Ellis and Carol Pancia at No. 3.
In ECU's five singles wins, Gol cruised past Ellis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, Walter outlasted Gomez 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 3, Borges dispatched Monica Walser 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Priest turned back Beavers 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 and Smith registered a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Pancia at No. 6. Gardner-Webb's lone tally came as a result of Kriett's 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 triumph over Soler in the top-seeded matchup.
East Carolina will take more than a week off before hosting North Carolina Central Friday, April 13. The contest against the Eagles was added when ECU and High Point were unable to make up a match lost due to cold weather Feb. 17.
