GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's and women's golf teams, along with the softball squad, have been honored with the 2007 Conference USA Sport Academic Award as announced by Commissioner Britton Banowsky Thursday. The Sport Academic Award is given to the team in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest grade point average for the current academic year. The ECU and Marshall women's golf teams shared the award and also posted the highest annual GPA of all C-USA teams with a 3.61 while the Pirate softball squad turned in a 3.37. This marks the highest GPA recorded by ECU softball in head coach Tracey Kee's 11 seasons.
Helping the Pirates to the awards were two sophomores, Lene Krog (women's golf) and Jessica Johnson (softball). Both student-athletes were named to their sports' All-Academic teams. Krog, the 2006 C-USA Freshman of the Year and Championship medalist, maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA as a business major. She participated in ten events for the Pirates, picking up the championship title at the Pinehurst Tournament in March and earning a spot in the NCAA Championships. Krog has twice received the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and was a 2006 National Golf Coaches Association Scholar All-American. Johnson carries a 3.62 GPA in intended merchandising. She has been named to the Dean's List each of her semesters at ECU and has earned a spot on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll twice. She led the Pirates in home runs (17) while also helping ECU rank second in the nation in fielding percentage with a mark of .990.
Rice earned the Conference USA Institutional Excellence Award for the second straight year. The Institutional Excellence Award is given to the C-USA institution with the highest grade point average during the current academic year for all student-athletes in conference sponsored sports. The Owls posted an overall annual GPA of 3.031.
