GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina swimming and diving teams split a dual meet with Duke Saturday afternoon with the Pirate men's team posting a 178-117 victory, while the women's team suffered its first loss of the year, 167-131.
The Lady Pirates (7-1) won their first seven dual meets of the season before suffering defeat today, while the men's team improved to 6-2 in dual meet competition.
"This was a great college dual meet," said Pirate head coach Rick Kobe. "The atmosphere was terrific and both teams swam very fast. I'm so proud of the effort of all of our kids."
ECU won 11 events on the men's side including one record setting performance from Thiago Cavalcanti. He set an ECU freshman record in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:32.84, breaking the former record of 9:34 .04 set by Matt Walker in 2000.
Sophomore Blake Briese and Roman Sandler won two events each. Briese captured first place in the 200-yard (1:42.99) and 500-yard freestyle (4:40.27), while Sandler placed first in the 100-yard (58.95) and 500-yard breaststroke (2:09.28).
Other first place finishers included: Greg Neville in the 100-yard breaststroke (52.56), Matthew Saccurato in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.38), Jason Guzewich in the 50-yard freestyle (21.51), Andrew Stoker in the 100-yard butterfly (51.60), and Ryan Hunt on the one-meter diving board (282.30).
The women's 400-yard medley relay team of Rebecca Perry, Stephanie Harper, Amanda Duncan and Jenna Stewart set a Minges pool record with a time of 3:50.84.
Stewart swept the sprint freestyle events with a first place finish in the 50-yard (24.58) and 100-yard (53.21) races.
Junior Alli Miller won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.77, while Perry won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.07.
Freshman Stephanie Harper captured first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.20.
East Carolina will conclude dual meet competition at home on Saturday, Feb. 2, with a tri-meet against Marshall, Chowan and Wingate.
