GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior goalkeeper Amber Campbell continued to receive recognition this week for her part in helping the Pirates maintain sole possession of first place in Conference USA. After helping ECU earn a valuable four points in the standings this past weekend, Soccer Buzz, the exclusive collegiate publication for women's soccer, named the Frederick, Md. native to its national Elite Team-of-the-Week.
The selection marks the second in Campbell's career, the other on Nov. 1, 2006, and the first for a Pirate since Kat Norris garnered the accolade on Oct. 24, 2007. The program now has four national weekly honorees since its inception in 1994. Campbell also earned C-USA Defensive Player-of-the-Week accolades on Monday.
Campbell produced her eighth shutout of the season and a school record 29th of her career in a scoreless tie with Colorado College on Oct. 17. She then followed that performance with five saves to lift East Carolina to a crucial 2-1 victory over UTEP two days later. In that contest, the senior tied the career record for saves as she now owns 352. She currently shares that standard with Amy Horton. Additionally, Campbell now holds or shares the Pirate career records for goalkeeper minutes, shutouts and saves.
"This is a great honor for Amber to be named to the National Team-of-the-Week," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "She has earned it with her play and I feel she is one of the top goalkeepers in the country."
ECU plays its final C-USA road contest of the season on Friday when it travels to Birmingham, Ala. to face UAB. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. at West Campus Field.
