SAN JUAN, P.R. - The East Carolina women's tennis squad swept six singles matches in straight sets and earned the doubles point to post a convincing 7-0 non-conference victory over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Tuesday afternoon at the Palmas Del Mar Resort.
The win, which also served as the Lady Pirates' third shutout in the last four outings, improved ECU's overall spring dual match record to 11-4.
The Lady Pirates opened the match by capturing the doubles point against Rio Piedras. Tandems Luiza Borges and Zandy Overcash (8-2), along with Kristin Gordon and Sheelah Iyengar (8-3), each rolled to impressive wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to clinch the first tally before Jessica Cook and Tamara Sachs closed out the action with an 8-5 decision against Andrea Lopez and Svette Melendez.
East Carolina continued its strong play in the singles competition, outscoring Rio Piedras a combined 72-16 in all six flights. Cook (No. 1), Sachs (No. 2), Hannah Priest (No. 3), Borges (No. 4), Alex Smith (No. 5) and Overcash (No. 6) all recorded victories, never allowing their respective opponent to tally four or more points during set play.
