Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season With Success

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The East Carolina track and field teams opened the 2008 outdoor season this weekend at the Coastal Carolina University Invitational. In all, the Pirates recorded five victories and had 18 top fives.
On the men's side, Spencer Barrick got things started for ECU, winning the javelin throw with a mark of 63.11m, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA regionals. In the 3000 meter run, Jarrett Newby took home 6th pace with a time of 8:49.88 while Matthew Dennish came in 10th (9:06.44). Christopher Richardson's time of 10.90 earned him 5th place in the 100 meter dash, while Brandon Small's 10.95 time was good for 8th. Small and Richardson also took home top ten finishes in the 200 meter dash, coming in 2nd (21.57), and 9th (22.10), respectively. In the hurdle events, Kris Bell finished 2nd in the 110 meter event, with a time of 14.56, while Mario Brisco's time of 55.60 was good for 6th in the 400 meter hurdle. The 4x400 relay event saw the ECU `A' squad come in 3rd, with a time of 3:19.55.
For the women, Amy Hart started things off with a victory in the pole vault after recording a mark of 3.50m. Stephanie McDougal came in 3rd with a mark of 3.35m. Charlene Grady took home 3rd place honors in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.73m. Danielle Eiler came in 3rd in the discus throw event, with a mark of 42.85. In the shot put event, it was Amy Mueller who came in 4th with a mark of 13.09m while Eiler added to her success with an 8th place finish (12.32m). In the high jump, Valeria Moore and Meghan Horne took home top ten finishes, coming in 7th (1.60m), and 10th (1.60m), respectively. Camelia Morman's mark of 12.06 earned her 5th place honors in the triple jump. Brittany Copeland's time of 10:18.44 was good for 3rd in the 3000 meter run. Copeland added a 6th place finish in the 800 meter run (2:19.64), and was joined by Claire MacAuley, who came in 8th (2:20.30). Shalice Anderson's time of 56.74 was good for 2nd place honors in the 400 meter dash, while Chalonda Silver's time of 12.36 in the 100 meter dash earned her 7th place. The Pirates swept the hurdle events, with Lindsay Dolan winning the 100 meter hurdle event with a time of 14.38 while Aisha Bilal-Mack took the 400 meter hurdle event with a time of 1:03.56. Jaslyn Grullon took home 3rd place honors in the 100 meter hurdle event (15.29). ECU's `A' team came in 3rd in the 4x100 event (47.76), and won the 4x400 event with a time of 3:53.97.
The track and field teams will head to Winston-Salem this coming weekend to take part in the Wake Forest Open March 21-22.
