Pirates Finish Third At C-USA Championships

HOUSTON - The 2008 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championship concluded late Saturday night at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston with East Carolina finishing in third place. SMU claimed its third consecutive C-USA crown scoring 926 points overall. SMU's point tally is the most ever earned in C-USA Women's Swimming & Diving Championship history, eclipsing the previous record of 906 set by East Carolina in 2003.
The league championship is the 12th consecutive overall for SMU and the team set 11 meet and pool records en route to winning 15 swimming events and the team's first C-USA diving title during the four-day meet.
Rice finished in second place with 635 points and East Carolina came in third with 518. The host Cougars finished fourth with 431 points, followed by Marshall with 365. First-year Women's Invitation members Northern Colorado (275) and Cal State Bakersfield (201) finished in sixth and seventh, respectively.
The Pirates' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Rebecca Perry, Jenna Stewart, Amanda Duncan and Rachel Blue earned all-conference status by placing third with a time of 3:27.53.
Duncan also achieved all-confernece accolades with a third place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
Men's teams from league schools East Carolina and SMU along with Hawai'i and Cal State Bakersfield were also competing in the C-USA Men's invitational. SMU also claimed the meet title in that event scoring 968.5 points. The Mustang men have also won 12 straight conference titles.
Hawai'i finished second with 819 points, while East Carolina claimed third with 651.5 and Cal State Bakersfield took fourth with 448 points.
Freshman Thiago Cavalcanti was the lone Pirate to earn all-conference honors on the men's team Saturday night as he finished in second place in the 1650-yard freestyle (15.39.10).
