GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina softball team fell victim to a late UTEP rally on Sunday afternoon as it lost to the Miners at the ECU Softball Field. The Pirates dip to 30-23 overall and 6-11 in conference play while UTEP improves to 27-19 on the season and 8-10 in C-USA.
ECU went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the third, scoring a run off of a RBI single by Angel Barrella that plated Charina Sumner. Sumner had singled with two outs and taken second on a wild pitch. The Pirates would extend their advantage to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Christina Merrida reached first on a throwing error by Jennifer Davis and scored when Barrella doubled to left center.
Just as the bottom of the fifth ended, lightning was spotted near the field which caused a 30-minute delay. That break was all the Miners needed as they responded in the top of the sixth with four runs on five consecutive two-out hits. UTEP starting pitcher Stacie Townsend helped herself with a two-RBI single that gave her team the winning runs as East Carolina could not push anything across in its last two at bats.
Junior Brooke Swann recorded her fifth appearance in four days in the loss, as her record fell to 18-17. She tossed her 23rd complete game of the season, giving up eight hits while striking out five.
The Pirates close their five-game homestand on Wednesday as they host Campbell in a nonconference doubleheader at the ECU Softball Field. Game one is scheduled for 4 p.m.
