Sumter, SC -East Carolina junior golfer Abby Bools carded a final round score of 67 to claim the 82nd Women's Amateur Championship of the Women's Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Sunset Country Club on the par-71, 5,816-yard course.
The wind at Sunset Country Club died down today and so did the scores. Twenty-year-old Bools (81-71-67=219) of Hickory, N.C. shot a 4-under par 67 to win by three strokes over defending champion Patty Moore (77-77-68=222) of Charlotte, N.C. Moore found herself two shots back of the lead heading into the final round but after carding four birdies on the front nine she came within one-shot of the lead.
Bools knew she would not be able to loose her focus on the back nine. "I have actually been fighting my swing a little bit," Bools said. "Thank goodness that my chipping and putting was there to save me." Moore and Bools were shot for shot until the 11th where Moore's approach shot was left of the green and she failed to get up and down for par. Bools went on to make a par and she again had a two-shot lead. Both Bools and Moore matched birdies on the reachable par 5 12th hole. Bools kept her composure hitting perfect shot after shot and finished with a birdie on the closing hole to win by three-strokes over Moore.
"I didn't let my Mom walk around with me all week," said Bools. "oday she walked around with me and it was the best I played all week. Next time, I think I will let her walk around with me more often."
Moore did capture the Senior division for a second year in a row. Players were placed into flights for the final round within their respective divisions. The Carolinas Tees plays a shorter course.
