PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In the East Carolina soccer team's final match of the Penn Invitational Sunday afternoon, the host Quakers used two goals in the first five minutes of play to push past the Pirates, 3-1, at Rhodes Field. ECU moves to 4-2-0 overall while Penn improves its season record to 2-2-0.
Despite the loss, senior goalkeeper Amber Campbell moved into first place all-time on the program career chart for keeper minutes played, breaking Amy Horton's old standard of 6,039. Campbell now has 6,128 for her career.
Ursula Lopez-Palm put the Quakers ahead just three minutes in when she took a cross from Molly Weir and put it behind Pirate keeper Amber Campbell. Penn increased its advantage to 2-0 just five minutes later as Kristin Kaiser used a through ball from Weir to beat the East Carolina defense and Campbell.
The Pirates answered in the 18th minute when freshman Jessica Woodward headed the ball past Quaker net minder Sara Rose off of a free kick from senior Savanna Russo. The tally marked Woodward's first collegiate goal.
Penn provided the final margin in the 22nd minute when Weir recorded her fourth point of the day. A corner from Sarah Friedman easily found the feet of Weir who poked it home. The Quakers dominated the stat sheet in the first stanza, producing seven shots as compared to four for ECU. The Pirates matched Penn in shots in the second interval, but could not find the back of the net.
"We made some defensive errors and we were down two goals after five minutes," head coach Rob Donnenwirth stated. "Penn is a good team with a very solid midfield. We picked up our intensity as the match progressed but they never allowed us to get much going."
East Carolina returns to Bunting Field on Thursday for the first time since Aug. 30 and a 1-0 season-opening win over Western Carolina. The Pirates face Gardner-Webb in a match that is scheduled for 4 p.m.
