
Track And Field Excels At UNC Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After improving its times at Penn State last weekend, the East Carolina track and field program collected three individual titles and 13 top 10 finishes to highlight its participation at the UNC Classic this weekend.
The women started things off with the 60-meter dash, as JaQuanda Wright turned in a season-best mark of 8.27 for a 44th-place finish while Alexis Jenkins took 46th, recording a time of 8.28. Then, in the 200-meter event, Funsha Jackson recorded a 27th-place result (26.63). Additionally, Shalice Anderson closed out the sprints with an 18th-place nod in the 400-meters with a time of 1:00.66.
Three distance events were slated next as Hollie Brooks produced the first top 10 finish of the day in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:23.13 (seventh-place). Next, in the mile run, two Pirates turned in top 10 results as Samantha Lichtner and Tara Wilson notched times of 5:05.72 and 5:16.53. Finally, Andrea Barletta represented East Carolina in the 3,000-meter run and finished in 11:50.98.
Another season best occurred in the 60-meter hurdles, where Wright sat 12th with a mark of 9.05. However, the highlight of the meet for the women was the high jump as Meghan Horne took the individual title with a campaign-best standard of 1.63.
The trio of Adian Sanderson, Anthony Green and Kevin Thompson kicked things of for the men in the 60-meter dash, finishing fifth, 11th and seventh respectively before Lorenzo Norfolk experienced his first action of the season in the 200-meter dash, taking seventh with time of 22.87. The sprints then drew to a close with the 400-meter event, as the duo of Ron Wright and Chris Richardson took second and fourth, respectively, with marks of 48.85 and 49.33.
Two distance events were next on the docket as five Pirates finished in the top 20. In the 800-meter run, Gregory Manning and Edrian Murray claimed 13th and 18th (1:59.06 and 2:00.95.) before Andrew Nastasiak, Harvinder Singh and Michael Scott earned 13th, 14th and 17th-place with times of 9:11.16, 9:11.30 and 9:19.99.
The Pirates closed the meet on a strong note, taking two individual titles. First, Kris Bell won his second title of the season in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing first in the qualification race (8.15) and the finals (7.99). Then, Percy Hinnant paced the field in the long jump, winning his first individual title of the year in the long jump and notching a mark of 6.82.
The Pirates look for even more success next weekend, when they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. as participants in the Niswonger Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Jan. 30-31 on the campus of East Tennessee State University.
