GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina soccer team (8-3-2, 3-2-0 C-USA) finishes this weekend's road swing with a game at SMU (3-8-1, 1-3-1 C-USA) Sunday at 3 p.m. Friday in Tulsa, freshman Caty Butler scored the Pirates' only goal of the game at 9:18, but it was enough as ECU picked up a 1-0 victory over the Golden Hurricane.
Against SMU, ECU has an all-time record of 1-2-0. The Pirates' only victory in the series came in last season's 2-1 triumph. In the previous two meetings, the Pirates failed to record a goal, falling 2-0 and 1-0.
In last season's win, Alexis Foltz scored at 36:01 off assists from Tricia Tufts and Savanna Russo. Amanda Malkiewicz used a pass from Leah Bagonis to put the Pirates ahead 2-0 at the 75:06 mark. SMU's Kaitlyn Eidson scored her first goal of the season at 78:04, but that was all the Mustangs could create on offense.
East Carolina continues road Conference USA games next weekend, traveling to Colorado College and UTEP. The Pirates face the Tigers at 4 p.m. Friday and the Miners at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Pieces of Eight
Facts to Know Before Gametime ...
Malkiewicz Drives The ECU Offense ...
In the Pirates' five Conference USA games, they have scored five goals. Malkiewicz has been a major contributor to that offense. She has scored once and added two assists, giving her four points in league games, tying her for the squad lead. Malkiewicz has collected at least one point in four of the team's past six games.
Wilcox Gives Offense A Boost ...
Through her first two years at ECU, junior Bailey Wilcox had scored four goals. This season Wilcox has found the back of the net a team-high six times. Entering the weekend, she was tied for third in Conference USA in goals and goals per game (0.50).
Wilcox's six goals this season are one shy of Blair Heffner's squad-leading mark last season. If Wilcox can surpass Heffner's seven, Wilcox will have scored the most goals by a Pirate in a season since Amy Szilard tallied eight in 2006.
Sharing The Winners ...
East Carolina has eight game-winning goals by six players this season. The only Pirates with two game-winners are Butler and Malkiewicz. Senior Jessica Swanson, junior Amanda Broz, freshman Hali Oughton and Wilcox have each had one.
A year ago, ECU had 14 game-winning goals, also scored by six players. Heffner led the way with four game-winners.
Two Is The Magic Number ...
Since the start of the 2006 season, ECU has posted a 30-0-3 record when scoring two or more goals. The only ties occurred in a 2-2 game Sept. 11 at N.C. State earlier this season and twice last year in a 2-2 draw at UAB on Oct. 24 and the following game's 3-3 deadlock at home against regular-season cochampion Memphis on Oct. 26.
Tough To Beat In OT ...
Since the start of the 2007 season, the Pirates have gone 6-1-10 in games that have stretched into overtime or double-overtime. The only loss occurred at UCF on Oct. 7, 2007, when Yvonne George scored with 58 seconds remaining in the second OT. This season, ECU is 1-0-2 when going extra time after posting a 4-0-4 mark in overtime contests last year.
