Soccer Plays Final Home Game Of 2009

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina soccer team (8-6-3, 3-5-1 C-USA) will close out the 2009 home season today with a 1 p.m. contest against Memphis (12-5-0, 7-2-0 C-USA). It is also Senior Day, as the Pirates will honor the careers of Alexis Foltz and Jessica Swanson.
East Carolina has experienced little success against Memphis, going 0-6-2. The only two ties occurred in 2006 and last year during the regular season.
In the 2008 regular season meeting, the Pirates took a 3-1 lead at 56:42 following goals by Bailey Wilcox, Blair Heffner and Amanda Broz. Memphis knotted the game within the next 15 minutes on goals by Kylie Hayes and Lizzy Simonin.
The teams also played in the Conference USA Championship game last season. Memphis took a 3-0 lead and won 4-1, claiming its second consecutive C-USA title.
Next Friday at 7 p.m., East Carolina plays this season’s final regular season game, at Marshall. The Pirates have never lost to the Thundering Herd, going 3-0- 1, including last season’s 3-2 victory that clinched the C-USA regular season title.
Senior Bios
Alexis Foltz
Alexis was elected as one of three captains this season after having a breakout junior year. She scored five goals last season with all of them coming in Conference USA games. Against Rice and Southern Miss, she scored her first career game-winning goals.
In the league tournament last year, Alexis had an assist on Bailey Wilcox’s game-winning goal against SMU in the first round. In the next game, Alexis assisted on Jessica Woodward’s goal against Colorado College, helping propel ECU into the championship game.
As a senior this year, Alexis has played in 13 games, taking six shots with two on goal. For her career, she has played in 57 games and made eight starts. She has six goals to her credit and four assists.
Off the field, Alexis is a nursing major who has been a three-time Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection.
Jessica Swanson
Jessica is also one of three captains selected for this season. This year, she has started all 17 games and recorded one goal and two assists. Her goal was the game-winner in the Pirates’ 2-1 season-opening victory against VCU. The first assist she had this season also led to the game-winning goal, as her pass allowed Bailey Wilcox to score ECU’s only goal against Old Dominion.
Last year, Jessica started all 22 games and scored three goals, including two game-winners, to go along with three assists. Of her five career game-winning goals, two have come against in-state rival UNC Wilmington. She also recorded deciding goals against UTEP her junior season and at Campbell as a freshman.
Today will be Jessica’s 79th career game played, leaving her one short of entering the top five of East Carolina’s games played list. Today is also her 60th consecutive start, and 72nd of her career, putting her four behind Mindy Nixon for fifth all-time in the Pirate program.
Off the field, Jessica is majoring in interior design with a minor in business administration. She has also been a three-time Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection.
