Puche Takes Fourth At Palmetto Intercollegiate

Kiawah Island, S.C. - Senior Ana Maria Puche fired a final round two-under par 70 to claim her second consecutive Top-5 finish, when she took fourth place at the 2009 Palmetto Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The 54-hole event was being held at the par-72, 5,916-yard Oak Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Puche, who placed third at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate last week, carded a tournament score of 219 (73-76-70) finishing three shots out of second place. The Barranquilla, Colombia native ranked third in par-4 scoring (4.04) and second in birdies (11) among the 93-person field.
Fellow classmate Abby Bools produced her second consecutive Top-10 finish after a two-day total of 222, which claimed a tie for 10th place. Bools (72-76-74) ranked among the tournament leaders in par-5 scoring (t-1st/4.67), eagles (t-2nd/1) and pars (14th/36).
Rounding out the Pirates squad were Amy Otteson (76-72-78=226) with a share of 26th, Amber Littman (74-80-77=231) tied for 42nd place and Colleen Estes (81-79-78=238) tied for 71st.
"I thought we played solid the last two days," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We were able to pick up quality wins over Campbell (No. 43), Georgia State (No. 51) and Maryland (No. 68), which will help us as we move forward in the spring. Over the last two weeks, we are playing much better golf, but need to improve and get solid play out of all five players and not just two or three."
East Tennessee State took home the team title after firing a 296 in the third round to finish with an 879 and take the 16-stroke victory over Kansas (895). Kennesaw State (896) claimed third place with ECU (897) and Maryland (898) rounding out the top five.
Maryland's Jessi Hollandsworth took home individual medalist honors with her 213. Tied for second were UALR's Mallory Fraiche and ETSU's Sinead O'Sullivan who both fired a 217, with Puche finishing fourth and Ket Premchuen (220) from Kennesaw State taking home fifth place honors.
The Pirates closed out their fall schedule with a 39-39 record and will be back in action on Feb. 21-23, 2010 when they participate in the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, which will be hosted by the College of Charleston.
