TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The East Carolina softball team opened up play at the Seminole Classic in Tallahassee, Fla., by dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 4 Michigan. With the loss, the Pirates are now 4-5 on the year and Michigan improves to 9-2. Freshman Caitlin Wainright took the loss in the circle and fell to 1-2 this season.
Neither team registered a hit until the bottom of the second inning when Michigan freshman Amanda Chidester's solo home run to center field gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. The Pirates had a chance to respond in the top of the third inning as Christina Merrida led off reaching on a error by the third baseman and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Bibee. A strikeout and groundout, however, ended the inning without Merrida scoring.
East Carolina missed out on another chance to tie the score in the top of the fourth inning when an error by the Michigan right fielder put Charina Sumner on third base with nobody out. A strikeout, a diving catch of a hard line drive and a pop out followed, ending the frame without any ECU runs.
Merrida started a rally again in the fifth, when she punched a single through the left side with one out. Her hit was the first for the Pirates on the day. Bibee sent Merrida to second with a groundout but pinch hitter Angel Barrella's strikeout finished the inning.
The Pirates then went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
For the game, Wainright allowed just three hits and the one run on Chidester's home run.
The Pirates finish the day with a 2:30 p.m. game against the host Florida State Seminoles.
